MAKING BABIES
Click
here to return to Web View
We will be making
babies today --- on paper of course! In order to do that you will have
to donate a gamete to the sperm/egg bank. Before any donations are made,
you have to determine some things about your own genotypes and phenotypes.
Procedure:
- Determine your
personal phenotype, then genotype, by following the cahrt below and
filling in TABLE 1 on the back of this page.

-
Now that you
have written down your own phenotype and genotype (on Table 1), you
must write down the letter of each allele on teh appropriate chromosomes
in your karyotype. Be sure to place the alleles at the site of the
gene. Make sure your capital letters are tall, and your lower case
letters are short!!!!
-
It's almost time
for your gamete donation. First we must undergo a round of meiosis.
You will cut out your chrmosomes and place one of eachpair into plastic
bags representing your gamets. When you are finished, choose a secret
code and write it on the outside of yoru bag. You keep one gamete
and donate one to the sperm ban or the egg bank.
-
Fertilization
Time!! You will be given a donated egg or sperm. Combine it with
the gamete you kept. This represents fertilization. Next you will
arrange the chromosomes based on size and glue them onto paper to
create the karyotype of your baby. Record the genotype and phenotype
of your baby on TABLE 2.
- Finally! Fill
out the birth announcement of your baby and draw an accurate (use the
fact sheet) and colorful picture of your child at the age of 15! All
parts of the baby packet will be turned in. This includes the karyotype
of your baby.
